Danger and Despair

Originally compiled and illustrated by Jane Horton for the Friends of the General Cemetery and revised by the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust.

The stories reprinted here give a fascinating picture of Victorian life through the vivid descriptions of untimely death. Drawn from the burial record of Sheffield's principal burial ground, the General Cemetery, these are tales of tragic accidents, rejected love, deep despair and sometimes plain foolishness.

The book also contains maps that will help you locate the graves of those whose stories are told here.

A sample of Danger and Despair can be read by clicking here.
