John Gunson
John Gunson was the chief engineer at the Dale Dyke Dam at
the time of the Great Sheffield Flood. He seemed to be aware
that something was wrong with the dam that evening and he
tried again and again to lower the level of the water. But
nevertheless, the dam burst with disastrous consequences.
This man of placid nature was shattered by the event and,
although cleared of blame by the select committee enquiry,
he forever lived under the shadow of blame. John Gunson never
regained his peace of mind and the inscription on his gravestone
reads,
removed from all suffering and
strife...
