Coal Measures

The main walls of the Anglican chapel are made from local coal measures sandstone. This type of stone is made of finer grains than the sandstone grit that make up the cornerstones on this chapel.

Coal measures sandstone gave the grinders in the steel industry a fine stone that could sharpen the knives and blades. Unfortunately, it also gave off a very fine silica dust that went into their lungs and led to an early death!
