Carved Granite

The tomb of Mark Firth is made from slabs of granite. Look closely at the stone and you will see glistening white mica crystals sticking out.

Look at the sculpturing of the urn at the top of the monument. See how the sculptor has carved a cloth draped across the urn. This was a trick that masons used to hide imperfections in the stone.

But in this case very little of the urn is hidden, which shows that it was a fine piece of granite with few flaws. This would have made it a very expensive work of art.
